Werner K. Hardt, 92, of Cape Coral, Florida passed away peacefully on Friday, May 10, 2019. Werner was born in Alt-Marrin, Pommern, Germany to the late Erich and Else Hardt. Werner’s relatives include his wife of 59 years, Alma “Helga” Hardt of Cape Coral; his son, Norbert (Laurie) Hardt of Lempster, NH; his brother, Bruno (Inge) Hardt of Peine, Germany, his brother-in-law, Magnus Kiauka of Madison, CT; and his beloved grandchildren: Erich (Angelika Nadeau) Hardt of Rochester, NH; Bryon Hardt of Medford, MA; Kasey Hardt of Charlotte, NC, Kevin Hardt of North Conway, NH; and Steven Hardt of Rochester, NH; and several nieces and nephews in Germany. Werner was predeceased by his son, Edwin (Barbara) Hardt of North Branford, CT; and a sister, Lotte Hartwig of Peine, Germany.

Werner was a member of the German border patrol during World War II, and he spent a year as a POW in a Russian prison camp. After his release, he trained as an auto technician with Mercedes Benz, and eventually emigrated from Germany to the United States in 1955. He traveled throughout the US and settled in Connecticut. There he met his wife, Alma Kiauka, and they were married in Branford on August 29, 1959. Werner and his brother-in-law, Magnus Kiauka operated a Mercedes Benz and Volkswagen repair shop, Werner Hardt and Associates, in West Haven, CT for many years.

Werner retired and moved to Cape Coral in 1987. He and Alma enjoyed traveling during their retirement, and spent their summers in Connecticut and New Hampshire. They both loved spending time with friends singing and dancing at the German American Social Club of Cape Coral, and they especially enjoyed the annual Oktoberfest celebration.

Werner was a true gentleman and a kind and thoughtful man. He had a strong work ethic and loved life. He will be remembered for his kindness, gentle manner, and the great love he had for his family. He thought of himself as “a lucky man,” but the real lucky ones knew him as a husband, a father, a grandfather, an uncle and a friend.
