Olive Stewart Mainhardt

August 8, 1922 ~ February 10, 2018 (age 95) 95 Years Old
Olive Stewart Mainhardt died peacefully with her son Peter at her side on February 10th 2018 due to complications from influenza. Olive was a life long New Yorker, born in Hampton Bays Long Island August 8th 1922 at the beloved summer home of her grandfather James William Gregg Esq. Her parents were Richard Stewart and Myrtle Gregg Stewart.

Olive was a smart, classy, strong and independent minded woman. She graduated with honors from Hempstead High School in 1940 , and after secretarial school she secured a job with Standard Oil at Rockefeller Center, New York City, where she had many happy years with her colleagues. The vibrancy of New York appealed to her. She met her husband Joseph Henry Mainhardt during the WWII years and they were married in New York and consequently celebrated 73 happy years of marriage. They raised their family on Long Island, at first in Huntington, and then Lloyd Harbor where they built a house on Lloyd Neck.

After successfully educating her children, Olive returned to school to achieve her own college degree from Stony Brook University graduating with honors with a BA of English. She then established two businesses. The first being Land End Labradors, and in conjunction with her husband, they raised Labrador Retrievers of the highest standard. Many are now in homes throughout Long Island. Rob Roy the Macgregor, was one of their most distinctive Labrador Retrievers, who achieved his championship at Westminster Dog Show, New York City, under the handling of Olive herself. Her second business was Olive Branch Antiques. Who with her son Peter imported and sold 18th century antiques represented in various shows throughout Long Island and the East Coast.

Olive loved her home and gardens. She was a member of the Three Harbors Garden Club and St Johns Church, Cold Spring Harbor Long Island. Her husband pre deceased her in the fall of 2016 and Olive continued to live independently in her home up until December 2017 with the love and care of her aides, her neighbors, the caring community at St Johns Church, and her dearest friends of 75 years, Peggy and Bill Milanese.

Olive moved to Cape Coral Florida so to be near her son Peter. She is survived by her children, Peter Joseph Mainhardt and his wife, Tricia of Cape Coral Florida, Meredith Graves Rotko and her husband Michael of Unionville PA and Douglas Robert Mainhardt and his wife Carol of East Setauket New York. As well, she is survived by four grandchildren—Sarah Graves Scoville, Will Graves, Lauren Mainhardt and Zach Mainhardt. Olive also is the great grandmother to Talon Whitney Scoville.

A memorial service is being planned for May 5th 2018 at St Johns Church, Cold Spring Harbor Long Island. In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made in Olive’s name to St Johns Church, Cold Spring Harbor, Long Island New York 11724 or the Three Harbors Garden Club 156 Lawrence Hill Rd Cold Spring Harbor NY 11724.
